Memo to Bob Taft: Learn from the Best About Political Timing

Bob, you need to learn from a guy who knows when to get the bad news out of the way:

Chicago Mayor Apologizes for Corruption (HT: Large Bill)

Mayor Richard Daley has apologized for the state of scandal-plagued City Hall, saying he should have done more to prevent corruption in his administration.

Federal authorities have spent more than 18 months investigating bribes given in return for jobs in a city trucking program. Earlier this year, that probe was expanded to allegations of fraud in city hiring practices.

“I take responsibility for these problems and tonight, I make a commitment to you to do everything within my power to fix them, root out those who engage in misconduct and hold them accountable for their misdeeds,” Daley said Tuesday night during a budget hearing at a neighborhood center.

“It’s become clear to me that I should have done more to maintain higher ethical standards and prevent corruption,” he said.

Daley, who has not been accused of wrongdoing, answered questions Friday from federal investigators. His office said the interview concerned certain city programs and policies for hiring and promotion.

A more appropriate headline would be “Chicago Mayor Apologizes for Breathing,” but Daley didn’t become Mayor for Life in Chicago by being dumb. His apology only stayed on Drudge’s home page for about 12-18 hours. Few will remember it, but it’s on the record now.

We’re still in the middle of wall-to-wall hurricane coverage, Bob, but only for the few days. Your resignation will probably get similar treatment to Daley’s apology, but only if you do it quickly.

If you wait to resign, it will only get worse. If you wait to get impeached (thanks to STRIKE TWO, it looks at least somewhat likely), it will be worse still.

Do the right thing while it’s easiest on you, your state, your family, and your party. Resign now, and get out of the way.
