Katrina Survivor, 104, Rejoins Family
SAN ANTONIO, Sept. 13 (UPI) — A 104-year-old man who barely escaped Hurricane Katrina has been found in a Texas hospital and reunited with his grandson in Chicago.
Amos Haynes, 104, headed to the Superdome Aug. 29 when waters began rising in New Orleans. Because of his failing health, he was separated from relatives and flown to San Antonio, where he was admitted to the Christus Santa Rosa Hospital.
He arrived Sept. 3 severely dehydrated and incoherent, hospital chaplain Donna Dickerson told the San Antonio Express News.
Meanwhile, Haynes’ 57-year-old grandson Maurice Kaufman in Chicago was scouring Web sites and making inquiries about his grandfather. Chaplain Dickerson was doing the same thing, and located Kaufman and called him with the good news.
Monday night, after a tearful reunion, Kaufman took his grandfather to Chicago, where he will live in a nursing home just a few minutes away from his grandson, the report said.
