Walter Cronkite: U.S. Too Ignorant to Vote

The man once known as the most trusted journalist in America no longer trusts Americans to vote for their own leaders, saying average citizens are just too ignorant to cast their ballots wisely.

“We [as a nation] are not educated well enough to perform the necessary act of intelligently selecting our leaders,” CBS News legend Walter Cronkite told the University of Southern California’s Annenberg School for Communication last week.

I guess King Walter would prefer to select our leaders himself–or maybe delegate the task to Kofi Annan.

Report: Donald Sutherland Rips President Bush

Sutherland ripped Bush and his administration for the war and Hurricane Katrina fallout.

“They were inept. They were inadequate to the task, and they lied,” Sutherland charged.

“And they were insulting, and they were vindictive. And they were heartless. They did not care. They do not care. They do not care about Iraqi people. They do not care about the families of dead soldiers. They only care about profit.”

At one point during the session, Sutherland started crying: “We(’ve) stolen our children’s future… We have children. We have children. How dare we take their legacy from them. How dare we. It’s shameful. What we are doing to our world.”

Sutherland went on rip Karl Rove’s “methods and means” against people like Cindy Sheehan.

“We’re back to burning books in Germany,” Sutherland said of NBC’s editing out of Kanye West’s comment on Bush during a hurricane relief telethon.

Mr. Sutherland, censorship (the “burning books” allusion) is when the government stops a broadcast. Not a broadcast network.

Clooney proudly wears ‘liberal’ label

George Clooney is mad that liberal has become a dirty word.

“I’m going to keep saying ‘liberal’ as loud as I can and as often as I can,” Clooney told Newsweek magazine in an interview about the film “Good Night, and Good Luck,” which he co-wrote and directed.

The black-and-white film about journalist Edward R. Murrow will be in theaters nationwide on Oct. 14. Clooney plays the role of CBS producer Fred Friendly.

Liberalism may cease to be a dirty word, George, when you tell us that “liberalism” does not include the elitism of Mr. Cronkite, the paranoia of Mr. Sutherland, claims that George Bush is this generation’s Bull Connor (historical background here) by a Democrat Congressman, or the fantasies of a black preacher that the New Orleans levees were blown up. The silence of you, your “liberal” friends, and the “liberal” elected officials you support in the face of these slanders is deafening.
