A bus driver and the driver’s aide, making their rounds picking up students for school, wound up saving a Hilliard child from a burning house.

Cameron Kelly was sleeping in an upstairs bedroom just above the kitchen when a fire started near the stove. The smoke alarm went off, but the 13-year-old never heard it.

But he did eventually hear school bus driver’s aide Dennis Sowers beating on his family’s front door.

“He was pounding on the door, telling me ‘wake up! Wake up!’ So I grabbed my dog and went out the door,” Kelly told 10TV.

Sowers was on the bus driven by Nancy Cline. As Cline was picking up one of the kids on her route, she noticed the fire and called it in to authorities.

While Cline worried about keeping the preschoolers on board her bus calm, Sowers went to see if anyone was home.

“My aide did not hesitate,” Cline said of Sowers. “He went straight up there, pounded on that door and got that boy out and one of the dogs. I just thank God that we were there.”

“I grabbed a hold of his arm and told him to come outside. His house was on fire. And I started yelling to see if there was anybody else in there,” explained Sowers.

His persistence paid off. After repeatedly pounding on the door, Cameron came to the door and realized the house was on fire.

The Kellys say the fire started because of a faulty wire near the stove. They expressed their thanks for Sowers and Cline spotting the blaze, and getting Cameron out safely.
