Living in Ontario at that time put me closer to the problem. The difference is that I would have paid $0 while providing BASIC food, clothing and shelter in remote barracks. Nobody freezes to death. Nobody starves to death. But. Want to watch TV? You'll have to clean the barracks toilets. Want bus fare? You'll have to mow the communal lawn. Want a pizza? You'll need to work 2 hours in the laundry. Want a job? You'll _have to_ attend training. Want a smoke? ... Books and chess are freely available.
