This Is Not Me, But It Could Be

From Peoria, IL:

Von Steuben Middle School Assistant Principal Tom Blumer broke the news toward the end of Tuesday’s announcements: Peanut butter sandwiches would no longer be served in the cafeteria this school year.

I support the school’s policy change. It so happens that I’m allergic to peanuts.

Note: I’m kidding about the peanut butter sandwich ban. No one else in my family was allergic when I was growing up, and they ate peanuts and peanut butter often. As someone who is affected worse than average by even the smell, I nevertheless think the idea of banning PBJs is silly.

  1. Ah, a conservative with some perspective. Far too often school systems have been accused of “nanny-state” rules brought down on them by the “food police”. I can understand their arguments when it comes to sodas and snacks. If people choose to consume items that can harm themselves, then it is their choice to make. Peanuts of course, are a different story as they can hurt others.

  2. #1, I added the note because I DON’T agree with the PBJ ban.

  3. Of course, the story never explains why the sandwiches have been “banned,” because it’s actually a profile of a guy whose job is helping Spanish-speaking students in Peoria.

  4. #3, true enough.

The writer shouldn’t have put something as important as a PBJ ban in the piece without explaining why. (/kidding)

  5. And let me add the story says nothing about PBJ specifically and doesn’t say it’s banned. It mentions PB only, and says it won’t be served in the cafeteria, not that it’s prohibited. (Presumably, some kids at Von Steuben might still bring their own peanut-butter sandwiches.)

  6. #5, good point. Another unanswered question. Will PBs or PBJs from home be allowed, or will they be treated as contraband?
