From The Business Journal of Milwaukee:

Schneider to hire 375 drivers in Ohio
11:51 AM CDT Monday, Sept. 18

Schneider National Inc. said Monday that it plans to hire 375 drivers in Ohio to serve a growing client base.

Schneider National, Green Bay, said its growth in the Ohio region is being fueled by new business and expanding relationships with clients in the area.

Compensation is based on experience, with new drivers earning about $35,500 to $43,500 in their first year. Experienced drivers will earn an average of $49,500 to $58,500 per year. Owner-operators leasing with Schneider National average $105,000 to $115,000 annually.

  1. This large of a single hiring is newsworthy, but trucking companies in general are all looking for drivers. I’ve been commenting on the economic significance of this for at least three years. Some companies will pay for CDL training in return for a commitment to stay with them, others are running ads clearly aimed at luring drivers away from other companies. Note the percentage of trailers you see on the highway with “drivers wanted” signs on the back.

Downsiders will claim that everything being hauled is coming in from overseas outsourcing. This is a factor, altho more so for recent railroad hiring, but far from the whole story. I would also assume that the dollar figure for owner-operaters includes lease payments for the truck, and as it depreciates some of this wealth goes away.

  2. #1, trucking companies have been looking for more drivers forever, as you noted. And you are correct that an owner-operator has to figure out how to make as much money as he or she can and pay all the bills on the $105+K that Schneider will pay.
