Peak Oilers’ Worst Nightmare
If you thought you needed smelling salts when you learned of the WaPo’s endorsement (mentioned earlier) of Maryland Governor Bob Ehrlich’s reelection, imagine the truckloads of the stuff Peak Oilers and assorted enviros are going to need when they read this:
Geologist: Earth has lots and lots of oil
SPOKANE, Wash., Oct. 20 (UPI) — A University of Washington economic geologist says there is lots of crude oil left for human use.
Eric Cheney said Friday in a news release that changing economics, technological advances and efforts such as recycling and substitution make the world’s mineral resources virtually infinite.
And the guy’s last name is Cheney!

World’s mineral resources are infinite? Well, that’s stunning news. Is the world also flat? Does the sun circle the Earth?
If the supply of oil is infinite exactly how is that obese Americans are consuming 25% of the world’s daily oil output. Clearly a resource which one nation consumes at such a gluttonous rate is not infinite.
And America’s oil is mostly imported. Imagine that … an infinite resource which a nation is forced to import because domestic supplies are limited?
If the supply of oil is infinite, exactly why is it that we get our oil from impoverished nations. If the Muslims consumed oil at the same rate as Americans they would have no oil to export. Same for the Nigerians and the Mexicans as well.
So I guess that Infinite-Oil is a myth, similar to the myth that children actually get their gifts from Santa Claus. Too bad for America.
America’s days as Global Emporer are numbered. We’ll live to see America’s economic, political and military collapse.

#1, He is saying that minerals, not oil, are virtually infinite, not infinite.
Domestic oil supplies are limited by our unwillingness to retrieve them. I am assuming you support drilling in ANWR?
You sound like you are rooting for our collapse. ¿Si?

“Virtually infinite” is an absurdly self-contradictory phrase. Sort of like calling someone a “mortal immortal”.
No, our resources are not infinite in any sense. The Earth is finite. All of the Earth’s resources are finite.
Oil is finite. This is a simple and certain scientific fact. Those who suggest otherwise are either lying or seriously deluded.
You say:
“Domestic oil supplies are limited by our unwillingness to retrieve them. I am assuming you support drilling in ANWR?”
You are mistaken. Domestic oil supplies are limited by Nature. There is not an ocean of oil under the United States. The sources of oil which existed — which were plentify, America was an oil-wealthy country — were depleted. For that reason we produce less oil now than we did back in the 1970’s.
No, I do not support drilling in ANWR. I have no interest in sacrificing any more of Nature on behalf of the America’s obese-SUV driving- consumer class.
You asked:
“You sound like you are rooting for our collapse.”
America’s collapse is inevitable. The collapse is self-inflicted by Americans. Our excesses are destroying our future.
So much, then, for the United States of America. A formerly great nation now bankrupt, depleted, polluted, and defeated at war. Too bad for America, but it’s just as well.

Aw, geez. It was meant to be a light-hearted post. I’ve done plenty of others that make mince-meat of the apocalyptic arguments.
Do me a favor: Do your part to save the environment, turn your heater down, and chill, for cryin’ out loud. And repeat after me: the world is not ending, the world is not ending….

Hello TBlumer,
The world is not ending … for you, maybe, at least not yet. But then again, I doubt very much that you know anything at all about the world.
Anyone who suggests that the Earth;s mineral resources are infinite is pretty far separated from reality. What sort of fantasy planet do you inhabit?
How can I trust such a person when he tells me that the world is not ending? Maybe there really is a Santa Claus. Maybe we really can live forever, especially if we never die. Maybe the Second Law of Thermodynamics does not apply to industrial civilization.
Don’t you know, sir, that the world is bigger than the U.S. of A.? The world has 6.5 billion humans.
If you disregard the 6.2 billion who live outside the U.S., maybe you really can delude yourself into thinking that everything is ok with the world.
But, no, these 6.2 billion are suffering terribly. 2 billion are impoverished. 2 billion more are exploited and enslaved by the West in order to produce our cheap resources and consumer products. The fine 2 billion are becoming very angry that the U.S. of A. because of its imperialistic militarism.
I wonder what the Iraqis think about the world: Do they believe that it is coming to an end? America has killed a half million Iraqis. Their country is destroyed. They live in perpetual fear of death.
Here some really bad news for you, sir:
America’s future is Iraq’s present.
We are going to live long enough to see the collapse of America. When that collapse comes, lots of people will suffer and die.
But you need not worry about the future. There’s plenty of shopping and television to distract you today. Don’t worry, be happy, everything is going to be just OK!

You embarrass yourself. Why did I know that Iraq would come up?
The post was light-hearted. The world is on track to end poverty if only it allows capitalism to flourish and prevents the nihilists from carrying out their plans of destruction; I’ve posted on that too if you look around.
Go away. Future comments from you on this post won’t be allowed through.
