10. Thats easy -the Hamilton County GOP had no power to push out Heimlich and he held too much controlling power over the downtown/Hamilton County GOP. She was trying to send a DIRECT MESSAGE to Hamilton County GOP- change or you will have a Democratic sweep of ALL three of the commish spots- which is her version of "I told you so". John Dowlin is a pusedo Republican so you might as well say its a sweep. The first since the early 1960's. It will look like city council and just as liberal.

#8 Not Stupid party just deaf- especially the Downtown Cincinnati/hamilton county GOP party leaders. New Republican leaders-reformers- will fix that. That is why Leslie Ghiz is on city council- she didn't listen to hamilton county GOP leaders and as they say the rest is hiastory. I.E. she got elected. Downtown/hamilton county GOP leaders don't listen to their party members in the surrounding suburbs. As far as Ted is concerned- if he stays leaning towards his conservatives who put him in office he'll stay in power-if he starts making OH look like the NE liberal states then those same conservative Republicans will throw him out on his ear.

#7, Schmidt does okay in town halls and less well in more formal settings. I have been told by a frustrated supporter that she is "finally" starting to "act congressional." I hope so.

Strickland is still a semi-legend in Southern OH. Schmidt was actually helped in the May primary against Bob McEwen in Scioto and Pike Countes because voters crossed over to the Dems just so they could vote for Ted.

It will be interesting to see if Strickland can maintain his pseudo-conservative veneer as gov. He might get away with it because the GA and Taft finally did a couple of right things with taxes, and hopefully they'll buy a clue and accelerate the schedule income tax cut. That would possibly enable Strickland to coast for a couple of years, which I wouldn't mind if the state's econ recovers. But... there's a reason why the GOP is often called the Stupid Party.

2 things about the 2nd Congressional District. 1. Jean Schmidtt needs to be a better speaker and conservatives need to stop voting for Ted Strickland ( according to the Cincy Enquirer 21% did) Support Jean.
2. Taft should have resigned period. Dot. Bingo. Down in southern Ohio everyone was linked to Taft who destroyed the Republican Party and the Conservative to moderate base. by the way according to the same Cincy Enquirer 23% of Republicans also voted for Ted Strickland either throughout the state or just Southern Ohio-they were a little vague. Thanks Bob. Your great Grandfather Mr. Republican is rolling in his grave and will haunt you for the rest of your life-at least we hope

#2, on Taft, I would like to have found out if his resignation would have made a diff. As to Schmidt, it is infinitely more personal than political, and no one has ever adequately explained it to me.

That minimum wage deal is indeed shameful. To enshrine that into the state constitution. Wow. And to elect such protectionist people otherwise. Ohio is going to become another Michigan at this rate. Sad.

[...] There was a great grassroots effort in Allen County and the Chairman there did a great job in what turned out to be a very difficult year. Only if the numbers in Allen County were more widespread in the region then things would have been much different. For more on the election follow up… read Bizzy Blog.
Excellent analysis, Tom. I agree with almost all of it--especially the part about McCain.

I disagree with what you have to say about Taft, because I am not sure his resignation would have helped us that much. He had already taken us of the rails, way before Tom Noe, etc. His utter lack of ideology and vision is what got us on the wrong track in the first place. The fact that this came after 8 years of Voinovich only added to the problem.

As for your comments about Jean, you are right on with those, too, except I won't concede that her Republican critics deserved to be labeled "right wing." They are careerists, posing as ideologues, and the right wing doesn't deserve the blame for their actions. I mean, they tried to run Bob McEwen as the more social conservative opponent to a woman whose present job was head of Greater Cinci Right to Life. That's just nutty. Everyone could see it was all because they just didn't like her personally, and that's when that group lost me.

Your last sentence could apply to the congress in general. I've heard more than one nominal conservative say something like "serves them right if they lose the House for 2 years." What makes people think this is only a two year deal? I have no such confidence. The best that could happen for the GOP would be for the DEM's to overreach.
