A West Side family is now homeless, but safe, thanks to a neighbor.
A fire broke at a house on Segura Street late Thursday morning. A neighbor, Floretino Briones, spotted smoke coming from and ran over to help the mother and two kids living in the home.
The mother, Valerie Flores, said she and her two kids were asleep when the fire broke out in the back room of the house.
“All of the neighbors were outside trying to look for us, trying to get in and I didn’t even know,” said Flores.
Briones just happened to be outside at the right time.
“I saw smoke coming out of the house,” said Briones. “So I ran over there and looked through the window and heard the kids screaming. So, I broke the front window.”
With help from another man, Briones was able to rescue the kids.
