#1, Dirty little secret: Rupert's a lib who likes to make money and knows that his market is with people who want "fair and balanced."

#2, I don't think the Dispatch could have successfully pulled off $60 a year online for non-print subscribers (print subscribers got online for free). If they had done it long enough, someone would have started up an OSU sports-only publication and stolen half of the Dispatch's readership.

There are a few pubs that have done subscriptions (Little Rock's paper, for example), but they are rare, and in places where competition isn't motivated to come in.

I think this was a mistake for the Columbus Dispatch and other small papers, but likely the WSJ will generate more than enough in ads to make up for it. Besides, I just let my subscription run out anticipating this would happen.

More access to more information is always good. Rupert is known for good decision making. Take his recent "warming" up to global warming concerns. Good stuff!
