Terry Lee Rucks likely doesn’t have nine lives, but thanks to his cat, Shaggy, he didn’t have to find out.

Rucks credits his four-legged friend for saving his life Friday morning when he began slipping into what could have become a diabetic coma.

He awoke shortly after 1 a.m. Friday to head to the bathroom when he began to feel the effects of low blood sugar.

“I was sitting down and just began to sweat profusely,” said Rucks, of Oshkosh. “I began to feel very shaky and nauseous.”

While he remained in fear of slipping into a diabetic coma and was unable to get up, Shaggy crept into the bathroom and spent about 20 minutes keeping him awake, Rucks said.

“He would not let me fall asleep,” the 61-year-old said. “He kept rubbing and pawing on my legs, and jumping on the vanity, meowing in my ear.”

After about 20 minutes, Rucks said he was able to get up and head to the kitchen to eat two spoonfuls of sugar and two granola bars to raise his blood sugar. When he was finally able to test his levels, his blood sugar tested at 41, which is extremely low for him, he said. His normal range is anywhere from 81 to 120.

“I’ve had diabetes for years,” he said. “And I’ve never had anything this serious happen to me before. If it wasn’t for Shaggy’s persistence, I probably would’ve slipped into a diabetic coma and collapsed. I probably wouldn’t be here talking. I’d be in the hospital, or who knows where else.” …..
