Couldn’t Help But Notice (032508)

Filed under: Economy, Environment, Taxes & Government — TBlumer @ 8:36 am

Those darn fact keep getting in the way of the globalarmists (those who believe in “globaloney” — the idea that global warming is taking place and that it’s caused by man — and that radical steps must be taken to deal with it).

Here’s the latest (HTs to Captain Ed at Hot Air and to James Murray at NewsBusters):

(ABC Counterpoint host Michael) Duffy asked (biologist) Marohasy: “Is the Earth still warming?”

She replied: “No, actually, there has been cooling, if you take 1998 as your point of reference. If you take 2002 as your point of reference, then temperatures have plateaued. This is certainly not what you’d expect if carbon dioxide is driving temperature because carbon dioxide levels have been increasing but temperatures have actually been coming down over the last 10 years.”

Duffy: “Is this a matter of any controversy?”

Marohasy: “Actually, no. The head of the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change) has actually acknowledged it. He talks about the apparent plateau in temperatures so far this century. So he recognises that in this century, over the past eight years, temperatures have plateaued … This is not what you’d expect, as I said, because if carbon dioxide is driving temperature then you’d expect that, given carbon dioxide levels have been continuing to increase, temperatures should be going up … So (it’s) very unexpected, not something that’s being discussed. It should be being discussed, though, because it’s very significant.”

This is in sync with a September 2006 UK Telegraph article by Bob Carter (”There IS a problem with global warming… it stopped in 1998″) that I have referred to several times in the past 18 months (one is here).

Would somebody please-please-please tell the three presidential candidates that it’s all a bunch of globaloney, before they see their election as a mandate for actions that will cause serious economic harm and stop the capitalistic march towards eliminating world poverty that has made such remarkable progress?

The track record of the Left letting go of its myths long after they are disproven is not good. One of the most annoying and enduring of them (HT NixGuy) is the antiwar crowd’s claim that returning servicemen from Vietnam weren’t mistreated, including being spat upon — never mind the overwhelming anecdotal and reported evidence that they were. Heck, as Nix reminded us, it doesn’t even matter that someone admits to having done the spitting.

So, referring back to the first item here today, don’t expect globaloney to go away quietly. There’s too much emotional and career investment for that to occur.

Uh-oh alert: Hugh Hewitt is promoting Objectively Unfit Mitt Romney as McCain’s Veep. The fact that Hewitt is doing so indicates that it may actually be under serious consideration.

Three people provide more than enough reasons why that would be nuts:

  • Janet Folger — “McCain: How to lose the White House”
  • Gregg Jackson — “McCain Must Resist Increasingly Surreal Hubris of GOP Elites
  • Yours truly — “The Comprehensive Objectively Unfit Mitt Romney Index”

Update: And there’s this (HT Gregg Jackson in an e-mail) — “It seems someone close to Gov. Romney has admitted to the fact Romney indeed was using an earpiece in that January debate. Well, the former Romney aide hasn’t signed an affidavit attesting to the fact his former boss needed to be told when an answer to a question had something to do with lower taxes. However, it sounds like something Romney would do.”
