The Cover Guy

The Trumpet Newsmagazine cover Stanley Kurtz of the Weekly Standard is looking for is here (click here or on the pic to enlarge in a separate window):

TUCC031107trumpet0307Obama

It’s the March 2007 issue. The cover image was found in the March 11, 2007 Trinity United Church of Christ (TUCC) bulletin.

Topics on the cover of this issue of Trumpet are:
- Barack Obama: History in the Making
- Africans in Disapora, Part 2 (in the United Kingdom)
- A Woman’s Worth, as Seen in the Eyes of Angela M. Brown, Cheryle Robinson Jackson, and Rhoda McKinney Jones
- Rear View: Abortion

Other Covers

Here’s an Obama-Wright bonus, as found in the December 26, 2004 TUCC bulletin (graphic is not clickable):

TUCC031107trumpet0307Obama

In this case, the topics are very difficult to decipher; Because of blurred pixelation, I can’t even tell what the issue date is. Since the Trumpet shown in the previous week’s bulletin had a different cover, I would guess that the above Obama-Wright cover is from January 2005.

As to topics, I can’t tell at all, except for the obvious “Yes We Did!”

Finally, there’s one more cover where Obama makes an appearance. It was found in the February 12, 2006 TUCC bulletin (click here or on the pic to enlarge):

TUCC021206TrumpetPantheonUnk

As with the previous blurred cover, I can’t tell what month it relates to. But I can read its title (“The Legacy Lives On”), and I believe I am correct in recognizing Obama, Wright, and Louis Farrakhan in the second row from the bottom. Positive IDs of the others would be useful.

Kurtz Is Right

The three Trumpet covers shown here may not represent all where Obama made an appearance, as my 125-plus collection of TUCC bulletins only represents about 65% or so of those I would expect to have been issued over the period from late May 2004 until late March 2008.

Kurtz writes that “efforts to obtain that (March 2007 Obama cover) issue from the publisher or Obama’s interview with the magazine from his campaign were unsuccessful.” I would suggest that it’s because it would, as does what’s on display at this post, give further support to Stanley Kurtz’s prime contention, which, based on his investigative work and the most rudimentary application of common sense, is this:

To the question of the moment–What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?–I answer, Obama knew everything, and he’s known it for ages. Far from succumbing to surprise and shock after Jeremiah Wright’s disastrous performance at the National Press Club, Barack Obama must have long been aware of his pastor’s political radicalism. A careful reading of nearly a year’s worth of Trumpet Newsmagazine, Wright’s glossy national “lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious,” makes it next to impossible to conclude otherwise.

Memo to CNN’s John Roberts, who says he has established a “Wright-free zone” on his program: Wright-free, schmight-free.

  1. Extremely interesting. I think you’re correct in ID’ing Obama, Wright and Farrakhan in the second row from the bottom on the third image posted here.

On the second image (Obama/Wright photo) all I can additionally make out of the text is the bottom headline, “The Haitian Disaster.”

Very much looking forward to your followup posts.

  20. I’m not getting it – what’s the point? Does Obama publish the Trumpet? Are they not allowed to use his image without his approval? Considering how much research you guys had to do to find this junk, it’s easily credible that Obama had no knowledge of it. With his limited time to read, he’s probably sticking to TIME and video news summaries.

    Comment by Daniel — May 15, 2008 @ 3:39 am

  21. #20, see #2. He heard sermons, received weekly bulletins, and was written up in Trumpet. I understand that he participated in Church panels at least from time to time.

The idea that he didn’t hear, see, or read about Wright’s white supremacist views in TWENTY years at TUCC is patently absurd.

It’s like saying you can be active in a Catholic Church for 20 years and somehow never see, hear, or read a word about the Church’s positions on contraception and abortion. Like I said, patently absurd.

So since he saw, heard, and/or read these things and stayed with the church, why shouldn’t we believe that he either subscribes to them, or that he is a breathtakingly cynical soul who stayed on because it was good for his political career? And what about exposing his kids to this?

    Comment by TBlumer — May 15, 2008 @ 8:02 am

  22. Taking your example, there are praciticing catholics who eat meat on Fridays, who use contraception, who fight for abortion rights. I don’t believe Obama has said he never HEARD those positions, just that he doesn’t agree with them.

Certain other presidential candidates do not believe that New Orleans was punished by God for scheduling a gay pride parade, despite clearly attending services by a pastor who does. But McCain must be lying, right?

    Comment by Daniel — May 15, 2008 @ 1:41 pm

  23. I don’t believe Obama has said he never HEARD those positions.

Yes he has. Countless times. From the very beginning of the controversy, up to and including “if I had known, I would have left the church.”

Certain other presidential candidates do not believe that New Orleans was punished by God for scheduling a gay pride parade, despite clearly attending services by a pastor who does.

MAYBE ONCE. Obama attended for 20 years, and was a MEMBER during most of that time. He told Major Garrett he was often a frequent attender. Out of 1040 Sundays, he surely attended 500, probably more.

    Totally, irrelevant, desperate comparison.

    Comment by TBlumer — May 15, 2008 @ 1:58 pm

  24. Once, lots; it’s the guys PASTOR! He must buy everything the man says, right? Isn’t that how it works?

    Comment by Daniel — May 15, 2008 @ 3:20 pm

  25. #24, what about “mentor and sounding board” don’t you understand?

Visit the link with all the “white supremacist” rhetoric. Obama surely knows of it, and its pervasiveness. He either agrees with it, or let it slide for the sake of his political career. Either way, he’s objectively unfit to be president.

    Comment by TBlumer — May 15, 2008 @ 3:31 pm

  26. I wouldn’t doubt that there is a video of Michelle ranting against whites, whatever euphanism she may have used isn’t the point. Listen to her tone of voice whenever she speaks to a white newsreporter, always has that edge of hostility.

These photos of BO on the cover of Wright’s mags is the smoking gun! Yes I do believe it means he not only knew of Wright’s radical anti-white rhetoric, but in some deep rooted way received comfort by hearing of it, as well as he must have had a kinship with some of that rant. That is scary. Do we need a type of Rwanda in our own backyard?
I certainly don’t want a person in the white house who had his campaign held at “Ayers”! He might use him as his personal advisor! And Farakan as his Secretary of State.

It was even further disgusting to hear Obama say, “better watch out” if you speak about my wife. Such a threat. What is he going to do? Sik Farakan & the boys after you if you do? That would be his MO with Ahmadijian if he had the destiny of becoming president?

Obama’s community service in Chicago comprised mainly of signing up Black voters, all with plans to have them vote for him for president. And Michelle….she is hoping that she can run for president after him. It’s written all over her, don’t you agree?

Her annoying depressing speaches are disgusting! And I certainly don’t want a candidate in the white house who always uses “te” instead of “to”.

BO is not the “Messiah”, he is not
a Miracle man who will wave a magic wand and poof.

Anyone who tells his followers…”We are the one’s we’ve been waiting for “, is an ego-maniacal narcissist.

His screeming speeches are typical of Hitler, to rouse the masses into stupifying oblivion.

“We are a congregation which is Unashamedly Black and Unapologetically Christian… Our roots in the Black religious experience and tradition are deep, lasting and permanent. We are an African people, and remain “true to our native land,” the mother continent, the cradle of civilization. God has superintended our pilgrimage through the days of slavery, the days of segregation, and the long night of racism. It is God who gives us the strength and courage to continuously address injustice as a people, and as a congregation. 31. Amazing…

Guess all the Catholics have to denounce their church.

    Ya know…with the pedophile priests.

    Hmmm….

    Comment by Sistah — June 5, 2008 @ 9:01 pm

  32. #31, O Ye Sistah, with a dumber than a box of rocks comment:

Catholics should denounce individual pedophile priests and demand their removal while supporting the “rock” of St. Peter.

If the Catholic Church won’t do what it must to individual priests, and a person believes that it remains the one true church, that person should find another parish to attend that doesn’t have such priests at the helm.

TUCC members should denounce their black racist, sexist, politicizing preachers and look for new leaders at TUCC.

If new acceptable leaders preaching the legitimate gospel instead of the lies of Black Liberation “theology” can’t be found, and if a person likes the UCC denomination in general, that person needs to find another UCC church to attend.

    This isn’t difficult.

And what I just noted isn’t refutable (and in your heart of hearts, if there’s one in there, you know I’m right).

    Your comment was “amazing” gibberish.

    Comment by TBlumer — June 5, 2008 @ 9:55 pm

  33. I sense an unease, not so much stemming from BO `acquintances’ but from a rather more subtle fact. Some people believe that BO being Black can not be President-its a presrerve of White men.

  35. 34. You can’t prove that what Rev. Wright said was a one-off comment or that he has been preaching that for all the 20 yrs BO has been in the church.

If you could prove the later, given the way you bizarrely overstretch the trivial of trivialities, you’d have blown it all the way to Mars.

    Comment by NoHate — June 8, 2008 @ 9:16 am

  36. John Hagee has made comments to the effect that Hurricane Katrina was God’s Judgement on the City of New Orleans. Hagee is a close associate of Pres Bush and endorses John McCain.
Why hasn’t there been a simillar outcry like the one raised by the BO&Rev Wright contoversy?

    Comment by NoHate — June 8, 2008 @ 9:36 am

  37. M. Blind to Hate –

    #36, because:
    - McCain hasn’t been a member of Hagee’s Church for 16-20 years.
    - Hagee is not John McCain’s “spiritual advisor and mentor.”
    - A Hagee sermon is not the inspiration for the title of a John McCain book.

IOW, there has been no “similar outcry” because there are no “similarities” to cry about.

#35, you can’t be serious. See the list of previous posts which I just added at the end of the post above, esp the May 5 series.

    Also see:
    - HERE (Weekly Standard, issue date May 19, released on about May 13)

To the question of the moment–What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it?–I answer, Obama knew everything, and he’s known it for ages. Far from succumbing to surprise and shock after Jeremiah Wright’s disastrous performance at the National Press Club, Barack Obama must have long been aware of his pastor’s political radicalism. A careful reading of nearly a year’s worth of Trumpet Newsmagazine, Wright’s glossy national “lifestyle magazine for the socially conscious,” makes it next to impossible to conclude otherwise.

….. it is simply inconceivable that in 20 years’ time someone as sharp as Obama did not grasp the intensely political themes repeated in so much of what Wright says and does. Radical politics is no sideline for Wright, but the very core of his theology and practice.

There can be no mistaking it. What did Barack Obama know and when did he know it? Everything. Always.

    - HERE (BizzyBlog, May 14 – “As Media Ogles, Stanley Kurtz Trumpets the Obviously Deep Obama-Wright Connections”)

    - HERE (BizzyBlog, May 14 “Jeremiah Wright’s Trumpet Newsmagazine: Cover Pic ‘Highlights’ [Farrakhan, Sharpton, Jackson, Others]“)

Only the totally ignorant or willfully blind would persist in claiming that Wright’s rant is a “one-off” in the face of this mountain of evidence.

And note that while Obama has resigned from the church he has pointedly said that he does not, and will not, denounce it. IOW, he will not denounce the despicable “Black Liberation Theology” TUCC preaches.

    Comment by TBlumer — June 8, 2008 @ 10:24 am

  38. And what could the titles of BO’s books be ‘America’s birds come home to roost’ or ‘How the CIA invented AIDS’
The point is somebody can have influence on your life but that doesn’t necessarily mean you will agree to everything they say.
What Rev.Wright said was as a one-off comment and does not form the core of the church’s doctrine. The contrary to this you can’t prove unless you peddle an outright lie, exaggerate or twist facts.
I don not have to read the other blogs. From what I have obtained from the 30+ comments on this blog alone, there is a deliberate effort by contributors to gloss over facts in enforcing their strong opinions on race or the hate of it.

    Comment by NoHate — June 8, 2008 @ 10:51 am

  39. Any particular article or sermon from the Trumpet suggesting the radical racial beliefs of Rev Wright that you can quote from to suggest he was consistent with his message of hate???????
Having Farrakhan on a magazine cover counts for nothing unless you know the context in which he appears.

just like newsweek or Time will not become a terrorist magazine because Bin laden was shown on their front cover.

  41. What Rev.Wright said was as a one-off comment and does not form the core of the church’s doctrine.

The linked material in “Previous Related Posts” that I inserted today at the end of this post proves you are wrong beyond any reasonable doubt.

What you’re calling a one-off is IIRC a montage from several sermons. If you go to Brian Ross’s March ABC report you’ll find a report to that effect.

In fact, even the TITLE of ABC’s report (“Obama’s Pastor, Rev. Jeremiah Wright, Has a History of What Even Obama’s Campaign Aides Say Is ‘Inflammatory Rhetoric’”) shows that you’re “one-off” characterization is pure BS.

But then, let’s go to the text:

An ABC News review of dozens of Rev. Wright’s sermons, offered for sale by the church, found repeated denunciations of the U.S. based on what he described as his reading of the Gospels and the treatment of black Americans.

    One-off my a**.
