After Stock Market’s Disastrous Day, AP Makes Several Wishful, Fact-Challenged Assertions

Tonight’s report at the Associated Press in the wake of Wall Street’s disastrous day isn’t quite an Animal House moment — “Remain Calm! All Is Well!” — but it’s more than fair to say that the wire service’s Matthew Craft and Bernard Condon allowed quite a bit of wishful thinking into their writeup.

In late June, I noted that the AP’s Ken Sweet asked a very important question about China (“IS THERE A POINT WHERE I SHOULD GET WORRIED?”), and failed to answer it. He also claimed that “The biggest concern is whether the drop in China’s stock market will cause the country’s economy to slow.” The headline and opening sentence in tonight’s AP dispatch attempted to maintain that false appearance (bolds are mine):

AP Report on Hillary’s Email ‘Worries’ Ignores Judge’s Order, Reuters Bombshell

The time stamp on an Associated Press report on Hillary Clinton’s email “worries” (“CLINTON FACING FRESH WORRIES IN CONGRESS OVER EMAILS”) by Ken Thomas and Julie Bykowicz this morning (saved here for future reference, fair use and discussion purposes) is 11:21 a.m. Eastern Time.

Despite that time stamp, the report fails to mention a bombshell report from Reuters (“Dozens of Clinton emails were classified from the start, U.S. rules suggest”) originally posted at 5:17 a.m. (time stamp has since been updated). Going even further back, the AP story fails to mention a Thursday afternoon story about how “A federal judge has ordered the State Department to cooperate with the investigation into the Hillary Clinton private email scandal.” The decision to ignore these developments is in all likelihood deliberate.

Positivity: Illinois Second Graders Adore School Janitor, Line Up to Get Yearbooks Autographed

From Bourbonnais, Illinois (HT Daryn Kagan):

Steve Weidner, a custodian at Alan Shepard Elementary School in Bourbonnais, Illinois, said it made him feel great to see that each and every second grade student lined up near the playground in hopes to have him autograph their yearbooks.

“I get along great with the kids,” Weidner told ABC News. “They are really great. We joke around a bunch and they’re able to talk to me and stuff like that.”

Weidner, a father of four and known as “Mr. Steve” to the kids, has been a part of the janitorial staff at Shepard for 15 years now.

Last week, Weidner said he signed all 104 of the second graders’ yearbooks after lunch — in addition to 200 more from other classes.

“I walked through the playground to get through the building and they saw me and started running,” he said. “You get one, you get all of them. Once they got a line I sat down.”

The district posted a photo of a long line of second graders patiently waiting for Mr. Steve’s yearbook signatures on their Facebook page Wednesday, June 3.

“Shepard Custodian Steve “Mr. Steve” Weidner has reached Rock Star status as he autographs yearbooks for his “fans,”!” the caption read.

The snapshot was uploaded to Reddit June 5 where it has racked up over three million views. …
