Positivity: Deerfield Beach girl saved from drowning leaves hospital

Filed under: Positivity — Tom @ 5:55 am

From Deerfield Beach, Florida:

April 28, 2016, 4:50 a.m.

After being released from the hospital Wednesday afternoon, 13-year-old Usely Michel met the 11-year-old who saved her life when he pulled her out of a swimming pool.

Angel Jesus Rivera, who lives in the Highland Village community, 4900 NE Second Ave., was on hand to greet Usely after she was discharged from Broward Health Medical Center. His beaming smile was a sharp contrast to his reaction Sunday, when he saved Usely from drowning.

Angel noticed Usely, whose uncle lives in the community, struggling in the water. He jumped into action, managing to pull her to safety. When he got Usely out of the pool, she was unconscious.

“I was very, very scared. I’m like, ‘Whoa, this is too much for me,’” Angel said. “Now look, she’s over there laughing in the corner.”

His parents, Violeta and Anthony Rivera, said they were proud of their son’s actions and glad that Usely was OK.

“I’m just happy that whatever lesson we teach him, he did it. That’s proving to us that we did right,” Violeta Rivera, 31, said of the rescue. She said her son would ask every day before school how Usely was doing. Before the rescue, the Deerfield Beach Middle School students didn’t know each other.
