Not Buying the Reported Decline in May Retail Sales

Here’s why (release; dollar data; percentage data):


Somehow a 5.2 percent increase in year-over-year actual sales turned into only a 3.8 percent increase after seasonal adjustments. The seasonally adjusted figure clearly doesn’t represent the underlying strength of the raw data.

May’s raw sales number is also the highest on record for any non-December month.
