CNN Digs Deeper Hole: Network’s Reax Tacitly Admits Threat (Update: Not Even the Right Guy?)

Digging a deeper hole (HT Washington Free Beacon):

“CNN decided not to publish the name of the Reddit user out of concern for his safety,” the network said. “Any assertion that the network blackmailed or coerced him is false.”

“The user, who is an adult male, not a 15-year-old boy, apologized and deleted his account before ever speaking with our reporter,” CNN continued. “CNN included its decision to withhold the user’s identity in an effort to be completely transparent that there was no deal.”

Given that CNN’s Andrew Kaczynski’s CNN.com item asserted that “CNN reserves the right to publish his identity should any of that change” — “that” being if the person involved takes back any portion of his “extensive statement of apology,” restores “offending” posts “he has taken down,” or does anything to “repeat this ugly behavior on social media again” — CNN is saying that they ‘reserve the right’ to jeopardize that Reddit user’s safety if he doesn’t comply.

That confirms the existence of a threat, and of blackmail. It’s not deniable, and it’s not arguable.

UPDATE: Geez, the theory is coming from Buzzfeed, so many grains of salt are needed, but the claim is spectacular, namely that CNN has gone after the wrong guy.
