  1. Tonight, cheeering for a new breed of warrior:
“The Math-letes” are one of competitors into the next round of “The Spartan Challenge”.

TV station describes their local team, with by-voice interview. Notice the leaps of faith during the obstacles.

Campus News: U of B, new york
Four UB students are competing on the upcoming season of “Spartan: Ultimate Team Challenge,” …

Dubbed the Mathletes, the team consists of four UB math students: Chris Komin, a senior majoring in math and film study; Zoe Herrick, a junior majoring in math and biomedical engineering; Trevor Bernard, a sophomore math major; and Ellen Lutnick, a junior who switched her major from math to exercise science. …Each team consists of five members: two men, two women and an elite Spartan athlete chosen by the show who serves as captain.

The competition (and its real-time commentary) emphasizes teamwork, requiring competitors to navigate the course physically and mentally: to problem-solve, with all team members required to complete an obstacle before jogging on to the next. Mental skills are a complementary asset in their overall skill set, their athleticism and stamina and spirit all coming together in unique ways for each team.

Look out also for the size factor, as another team still in the competition are all very short.

The obstacle course ends in a ‘human ladder’ as the teams must scale ‘The Wall’.

Official site is here, for more info on this new warrior ethic. (Not all warriors only play video games).

(P.S. If this sounds too much like an advertisement, my apologies. It is meant to be a commentary on our evolving culture: at universities, on the ‘sports’ fields, and in the workplace, and with our nuclear (biological) families and our extended (friends and teammates) connections. CHEERLEADING FOR THE Math-letes, and for the overall value of Team Spirit.
