On Tuesday night, retired Iowa State Trooper Charlie Black rescued John Govia Jr. along Interstate 80 for the second time in 31 years.

Govia Jr.’s SUV had broken down twice on his drive from Peoria, Ill., with his girlfriend and 8-year-old daughter. They were traveling to meet Black and his wife, Trudy, at a downtown Des Moines hotel.

But their SUV had other plans, its battery giving out in the Quad Cities. They got back on the road, but by 8 p.m., Govia Jr. called Black to say the vehicle had broken down again.

“Let’s just go pick them up,” Trudy Black said. “You can rescue him again.”

So they did, where a sweaty Govia Jr. hugged Black on the shoulder of the highway as traffic whizzed by and twilight fell on a muggy night.

“How ironic,” Govia Jr. said. “How fitting. Right here on the same road.”

The reason Govia Jr. was driving to Des Moines to meet Black was because of their fateful first meeting along I-80 on March 21, 1986.

Govia Jr. was just 19 months old then. He has no memory of the day — only the story of how the Iowa State Patrol saved him from his homicidal father, John Patrick Govia Sr. …
