  7. About 15 years ago, a small time news producer at another Gannett owned company, Channel 12 News in Phoenix, Arizona, wanted to publish the full names, home addresses, gender, race, social security and home phone numbers of all teachers holding certification from the Arizona State Department of Education. This was proposed in the name of “protecting children against child molesters.” I phoned this woman and asked her 1) how she would feel if her details were to be published due to a relatively small number of her colleagues, breaking the law but had gone through the justice system 2) where/how she was storing the details she had already obtained 3) what protection *I* had against her or a member of her staff using these details for a purpose other than stated when obtaining them (such as identity fraud.) 4) how was it appropriate to target all teachers without due process of law, since a newschannel is not a court, a police body nor a government entity. Her responses were: 1) this is about protecting children…and I must be suspect if I objected to that. 2) in her office in a filing cabinet behind a secure entrance. 3) they were ***JOURNALISTS*** and could be trusted. 4) anybody can be a molester and the police need all the help they can get.

I wish to heaven I could have another conversation with her to discuss Christopher Fountain fighting back against the Third Estate’s monopoly on “protecting” the public.
