  1. Ms. Schmidt isn’t a strong conservative at all, although I am sure that she will win the respect of some based on, well, her ability to lash out…even if it is misplaced. Her implication that Congressman Murtha is a coward is really just a cheap shot at a man who has fought for and served his country well for over 4 decades. Ms. Schmidt could better serve the people she represents if she dignifies people that don’t necessarily share her views and allows a bit of public discourse to occur.

  2. The untold story about Jean Schmidt’s tirade is that the Marine Colonel whom she quote has never served a day overseas or ever in harm’s way, but he also fools everybody to think that he led the charge into Baghdad. Somebody should be looking into the background of this Colonel and determine why (and how he managed) to never served in the First Gulf War.

  3. #1, I honor Murtha’s service, but that’s not a lifetime pass, and he seems to have lost the up button on the elevator to his brain. One example: He was one of two congressmen to vote FOR reinstituting the draft back in October. Also, he’s changed his mind more than his underwear (but not by much) about this war.

#2, I just rewatched. She never characterized the man as an overseas vet, so the truth or falsity of your claim is irrelevant.

  6. TBlumer -

The issue is one should be careful of calling another a coward and not a Marine, especially if that exact same appellation may be applicable to that person doing the calling in the first place.

  7. #6, the vote was the determinant. 403-3. 403 either aren’t cowards, or don’t want to be seen as such.

  9. Put Your Money Where Your Mouth Is

Democrats have been viciously attacking the war in Iraq and pushing for a withdrawal of American troops for months now. Well, last night Republicans finally found their spine and forced Democrats in the House of Representatives to put their money whe…

    Trackback by New England Republican — November 19, 2005 @ 12:39 pm

  10. 403 people voted against a Republican’s resolution to immediately pull out of Iraq. They haven’t voted on Murtha’s proposal to remove troops at “the earliest predictable date.”

Oh, and as for your hero, Jean Schmidt…

Mr. Speaker, my remarks were not directed at any member of the House and I did not intend to suggest that they applied to any member, most especially the distinguished gentleman from Pennsylvania. I therefore ask for unanimous consent that my words be withdrawn“.

  11. Tom,

You mentioned Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen of Florida. She was guest blogging yesterday at NoEndButVictory.com.

  12. #10, BFD. I see it as the equivalent of a trial lawyer asking a pointed question in court that gets objected to, and then has to be withdrawn. The point has been made. Then the jury is told to disregard the question that was just asked. Yeah, right.

Whether she had to withdraw her comment is debatable, as her called named the Congressman, not her. It wasn’t worth bickering over. When you’ve made your point, who cares?

  13. You must respect irony, though. Schmidt is now being heralded as a champion for the pro-war, anti-”cut and run” crowd, yet she “cuts and runs” immediately after her statement.

  14. #13, when a lawyer has a withdraw a question that made his/her point, he/she doesn’t care about the irony… he/she made the point. I see her as forced by House Rules to withdraw her point–very different.

  15. Like I told Eric at Project Logic…

So she was for calling Murtha out by name before she was against it?

    Score one for nuance!

  16. Aw, geez, we’ve beaten this horse silly.

Some large percentage of about 200 Democrats now has to say “I voted against immediate withdrawal even though I’m really for it” to placate what must be an incredibly PO’d MoveOn moonbat base. There’s a word for someone who won’t vote their convictions….

If you want me to send you the text of your posts so you don’t lose, them, let me know. I’m assuming the e-mail addy you used is not valid.
